“Stockholm has been hailed as the Venice of the North because of its grand architecture and the fact that it’s built on islands, cleaved by canals and joined by bridges. What’s more Stockholm’s gay scene is spread throughout the city like splattered pearls, but especially around the Södermalm & Gamla Stan districts. Plus, Swedish men are a glory to behold – initially reserved, yet animals in bed!”

It’s Fashion Week in Stockholm! And when you think of Swedish fashion you might think of really, really tight jeans. Lately this formfitted garment has become as much a national symbol as meatballs, clogs and Ingmar Bergman. Here are a few places where you can find a pair for yourself! Wear them or keep them as a souvenir.

Weekday – Concept store for the successful jeans brand Cheap Monday. Featuring a wide, updated selection of other brands, especially Swedish.

Acne – A fashion house that has met with great success all over the world, using its trendy and innovative jeans collection as a starting point.  Today Acne makes entire women’s and men’s collections, including shoes and accessories. The flagship store is on Norrmalmstorg square in downtown Stockholm.

PUB – Classic department store by Hötorget Square. Now offering an exciting, creative blend of new and vintage fashions, art and design, cosmetics, jewelry, books, CDs and magazines, exhibitions, events and much more.

Nudie – Yet another success story for a Swedish jeans label. Nudie jeans has opened its first store with room for the entire Nudie collection, its sister label Denimbirds and organic jeans. An extremely wide-ranging product line with something every style and age group.

H&M – These days H&M is a huge global player. In central Stockholm you’ll find the biggest selection in the massive concept stores at the intersection of the streets Hamngatan and Regeringsgatan. In Stockholm we also have the only H&M Home Store!

Rooney Mara to play Lisbeth Salander in Hollywood remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig have been cast in the lead roles of Columbia Pictures’ three-picture adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s literary blockbuster The Millennium Trilogy under the direction of David Fincher.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo – the first film of the series, which also includes The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest – begins shooting next month here in Sweden. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is set for worldwide release December 21, 2011.

Noomi Rapace wowed audiences with her performance as Lisbeth Salander, and these are huge shoes for Mara to fill. Think she can do it? Share your thoughts!

Would you like to do something really Swedish while you’re in Stockholm? Then my suggestion is to eat crayfish.

What would August be without a crayfish party? Eating freshwater crayfish in August is one of Sweden’s most cherished food traditions. The “red gold” is boiled with salt, dill and other seasonings, then chilled and eaten fresh from the shell.

Brännvin (distilled alcohol such as vodka) is traditionally the accompanying drink, but beer is also a favorite.

A number of Stockholm restaurants serve crayfish during certain weeks in August. Contact the restaurant in advance to see if crayfish are on the menu before visiting. A select few are listed here>>

Impossible to describe and impossible to resist. A sexy, funny and dangerous experience, LA CLIQUE‘s heady cocktail of cabaret, new burlesque, circus sideshow and contemporary variety has taken the world by storm. Showcasing the crème de la crème of twisted cabaret entertainers from around the world, LA CLIQUE is an international sensation, hailed by Time Out as ‘spellbinding, sexy and stunning’.

This is for all the passengers on Atlantis Baltic Gay Cruise. Tomorrow you’ll be in Stockholm and I have some suggestions on how to spend your day.

Whatever you do, do not miss a visit to Mälarpaviljongen! A must when you’re in Stockholm. Mälarpaviljongen is a verdant oasis with a restaurant, bar and alfresco section, located on the pier, waterfront and a barge at Norr Mälarstrand. From here you have the most stunning views across the waters of Riddarfjärden. This LGBT hot spot is the place if you are looking for an atmospheric, cozy local restaurant and high-spirited bar with great music and people.

Visit Fotografiska, one of the world’s largest meeting places for contemporary photography. Now showing Annie Leibovitz, A Photographer’s Life 1990-2005. In addition to the main exhibition area, Fotografiska also houses a book and souvenir shop, a restaurant, a photo gallery, and a bar boasting one of Stockholm’s best views.

Want to experience something different? Visit the Hallwyl Museum. Rumored lesbian Countess Wilhelmina von Hallwyl devoted her later years to cataloguing her life’s everyday objects, from toothbrushes to oil paintings and silver chalices, creating both a historical slice-of-aristocratic-life and an eccentric tribute to monomania.

If you would like to go somewhere not far away from your boat I recommend the Millesgården sculpture park at the former home and studio of its creator Carl Milles, Sweden’s foremost sculptor. Located on a serene clifftop overlooking Lake Värtan and chock full of monumental replicas of his most stunning, often erotic works, the terraced garden is especially magical at sunset, when his world-famous Angel Musicians and Hand of God dance against the orange-streaked sky.

Take a stroll in Gamla Stan (the Old Town) , one of the largest and best preserved medieval city centers in Europe. This is also one of the foremost attractions in Stockholm. This is where Stockholm was founded in 1252. In Gamla Stan, at idyllic Stortorget Square, you find the cozy LGBT café Chokladkoppen. Exquisite sandwiches and pastries, and a very popular alfresco section.
